Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a painful and often misunderstood condition that can be highly debilitating. Symptoms may include shoulder, neck and arm pain and invariably, there is a loss of mobility or range of shoulder motion. Simply put it hurts, it hurts almost all of the time and you cannot move the shoulder well.

BIKE RIDDIM: MUSICIANS ON A MISSION
Three years ago Frome Physical Therapy patient Ken Sorensen was bicycling in Neptune City, NJ with and his wife Katie Saldutti and their baby. They realized that it just wasn’t safe to bicycle in their neighborhood with a child on the streets of Neptune City. They also observed that it was almost impossible to cross Memorial Drive on foot as a pedestrian without risking their lives.

Rolfing and Yoga – what’s the connection?
While yoga has been around for over 5,000 years, Dr. Ida Rolf, a biochemist from the Bronx began to develop Rolfing in the 1920’s. Over the course of 30 years she formed this unique bodywork technique that stretches and repositions the connective tissue wrappings of muscles to enhance breath, posture, alignment and movement.This ancient Chinese practice uses movement and meditation to cultivate health throughout life’s journey. Have you tried a Rolfing series? ?
A ten session series of Rolfing provides an eloquent path to a strong, well ordered and flexible body. It represents a body of work, a process during which one has shifted structurally towards a more expanded, easeful place. In most cases by the end of ten sessions preexisting pain has decreased or entirely disappeared. While liberating shortened, adhered fascial wrappings, muscles are repositioned so that they work in synchronicity with other muscles to provide healthy joint movement.

Stretches for The Psoas
Last month, we featured the psoas (hip flexor) muscle and some of its’ mysteries. If the psoas muscle goes into spasm frequently enough, over time the muscle will take on a shortened position. A shortened psoas will not extend or lengthen to accommodate changes in position and movement.
Here are some psoas stretches from several different disciplines. Always stay inside the pain free range.

Rolfing, Back Pain and the Psoas!
Henry, a new patient complains of a shooting pain in his low back every time he rises from sitting. He states that it has been several weeks since the onset, and it has been getting worse. After walking around for a few moments it goes away. Henry asks us to explain what is wrong with his back. In fact, the problem is with his hip flexor muscle, not his back. We explain to him that often a short psoas contributes to low back, hip or pelvic pain.

Toronto Racquet Club Fire.
An enormous fire at the Toronto Badminton & Racquet Club began on the morning of February 14th. Over 40 trucks and 120 fire fighters fought the blaze at Saint Claire Avenue and Yonge Street. The fire began shortly after 9AM and raged for over 12 hours. Heavy black smoke enveloped many buildings throughout the neighborhood. Many area residents were forced to evacuate there homes. Many are finally returning after a week. Indoor air quality remains to be a significant problem for area residents.

Can Acupuncture Help With Surfing Injuries?
Almost every summer, there are news stories about sharks preying upon surfers. In fact, surfing involves risk, but sharks are not usually the problem.
According to Dr. Andrew Nathanson, emergency medicine doctor who specializes in surf related injuries, “collisions are by far the greatest risk to surfers.” Over 55% of all surf accidents involve being struck by your own board and 11% by someone else’s board. An additional 18% are due to impact with the ocean floor.

March is cerebral palsy awareness month. Research at Stanford University demonstrates that Rolfing is helpful for children with mild to moderate cases of spastic cerebral palsy. Mildly impaired patients showed significant improvements in gait, as was demonstrated in clinical trials.

Thyroid Disease & Acupuncture
According to the American Thyroid Association, one in eight people in the US are diagnosed with thyroid disease. Did you know that January is Thyroid Awareness Month?
The thyroid is a small gland in the front of the neck that helps regulate your metabolism. If your body produces too much or too little thyroid hormone, you can have excessive weight gain or weight loss. You could also suffer from lethargy or hyperactivity. Thyroid disease can also cause abnormal menstrual cycles, infertility and problems to both the mother and fetus during pregnancy.
